Maritime Quality Milk (MQM) was established in 2006 as a research and service center at the Atlantic Veterinary College. The founding faculty members had the goal of establishing a program, with a national and international reputation, focused on the priorities of the regional dairy industry. Using program funding from the Canadian Bovine Mastitis Research Network as seed money, MQM accessed additional resources under the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency –Atlantic Innovation Fund to broaden its research program and build human resource and infrastructure capacity. It is now well established as a leading center for dairy health research and service in Canada and has generated more than 5 million dollars in research contracts and service revenue in the first 4 years of operation.
Dr. Greg Keefe is the founding Director of the center and, along with Mr. Art Gennis, Project Manager, supervises the program operations. The program is supported by excellent laboratory, data management and field-based technical personnel. Additionally, the scientific base of the program within the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiologic Research provides an academic home for MQM-associated faculty and graduate students. Full details on MQM human resources can be found in the staff section of our website. The primary focus of MQM is milk quality and Johne’s disease. The program maintains state-of-the-art laboratories and participates in a number of inter-lab quality assurance programs related to these areas.
MQM is committed to remaining focused on the needs of the regional industry. It has an Advisory Board with representation from dairy producer organizations, dairy veterinarians, milk quality experts, milk recording agencies and dairy processors. Advisory Board membership is outlined elsewhere on the website. MQM offers research validated products and services to the industry and conducts research for both public and private clients regionally, nationally and internationally.
